Smoke Alarm, Carbon Monoxide Alarm & Emergency Lighting Testing Instructions

This task consists of three parts. You will log your findings in the online webpage app. 

Each house has 3–6 alarms, and the process should take no more than 5 minutes.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

 

1. Smoke Alarm Testing

 

(Take a picture of each alarm as you test it and record your findings in the app.)

  • Visual Check – Ensure the smoke alarm is secure and free from dust or obstructions.
  • Press the Test Button—Hold the button until the alarm sounds. (If you are unsure, Watch the how-to video. Use a broom handle or similar if you can’t reach it.)
  • Confirm Sound—The alarm should be loud and continuous. If it is weak or silent, report it immediately.
  • Check Interlinked Alarms (if applicable) – If alarms are interconnected, ensure they all activate when one is tested. However, each alarm must be tested individually to confirm they all siren.
  • Log the Test – Record the result in the fire alarm app and upload a photo of the alarm.
 

2. Carbon Monoxide Alarm Testing (Located near the boiler)

 
  • Visual Check – Ensure the CO detector is located near the boiler and free from dust or obstructions.
  • Press the Test Button – Hold until the alarm sounds.
  • Confirm Sound—The alarm should be loud and continuous. (It is NOT an interlinked alarm, so others will not activate.)
  • Log the Test – Record the result in the fire alarm app and upload a photo of the alarm.
 

3. Emergency Lighting Testing (Watch explainer video if required.)

 
  • Locate the Circuit Breaker for Emergency Lights. (usually near the circuit board) 
  • Insert the Test Key – Use the fish-shaped key to turn off power to the emergency lights 
  • Check All Emergency Lights – Ensure they are fully illuminated while the power is off. (located at the top and bottom of stairs. The green internal lamp should be off).
  • Restore Power – Reinsert the test key to turn the lights back on.
  • Confirm Charging: Look for a small green LED light inside the emergency light, indicating charging.
  • Log the Test – Record the result in the app and upload a photo of the emergency lights.
 

✅ Final Step: If alarms or emergency lights are faulty, report the issue immediately.
